The title "RAGINI MMS" was more than enough to grab your attention. It gave an impression that the film was based on an MMS scandal. Then, the promos made it clear that there was a paranormal element attached to the film as well. So is it a good blend of Sex and Horror ? Let's find out.
The story first is UDAY sets out for a Romantic weekend with his girl-friend RAGINI at a friend's farmhouse on the outskirts of Mumbai.
There are cameras set up in the entire farmhouse and Raj is on a mission to shoot a sex tape with Ragini, without her knowledge. But everything doesn't go according plan as they first have to put up with some unwanted friends and then a spirit.
The details about the spirit's past are avoided and we get to know about her only through her rumblings. "I am not a witch, I didn't kill my children," she squeals in Marathi.
Coming from the makers of LOVE SEX AUR DHOKA and inspired by PARANORMAL ACTIVITY, director Pawan Kriplani's RAGINI MMS is a noble attempt. But it falls short when it comes to execution. The combination of comedy, sex and horror doesn't quite add up to an entertaining output.
The first half is slow with zilch movement in the story. There's an eerie scene in which a plastic bag is seen moving while Uday and Ragini are making out. Uday's comic antics manage to make you laugh. But you are left asking for more.
The narrative improves significantly in the second half with some engaging sequences. The climax, in particular manages to keep you hooked. But you wish there were a lot more scary sequences.
Pawan relies primarily on sound effects rather than visual horror to scare you. But the sound effects shock you instead of scaring you.
Also, the clich of spirits being incompetent during the day is not avoided here. And it's baffling to know that spirits can't pass through closed doors.
Tribhuvan Babu's cinematography, which involves many scenes through hand-held cameras, is good. Faizan-Agnel's background music is loud but effective. Pooja Ladha Surti's editing is tight. Raj Kumar Yadav plays his role with great poise and confidence. Note the scenes in which he is possessed. Kainaz Motiwala acts well as the gullible Girlfriend.
They share an electrifying chemistry. RAGINI MMS isn't worth "Circulating", if you have a large appetite for horror.
