BPL Census Set To Begin Next Month

Starting next month, the Centre will embark on a massive socio-economic profiling exercise that will not only identify the poor in the country but also the caste and religion of all citizens to ensure precise and effective dispensation of government schemes and projects.

The Union Cabinet on Thursday approved the proposals of the ministries of Rural Development and Home, after a lengthy discussion in which some members questioned the parameters framed to segregate those from the BPL category.

Some members felt owning a two-wheeler, for instance, should not be considered an exclusion parameter given that a sizeable rural population did own two-wheelers.

Another member said pucca houses should be excluded for hilly regions as this was the norm in such areas.

The enumeration on caste and religion has been clubbed together and enumerators, for the first time, will use low-cost devices that looks like an IPAD to feed information that will subsequently be downloaded to a main computer.
